VX-44 Blackfish fundamentals

Post by Eagle-Eye »

Wrote this for an info tab in my mission, but was notified it would be useful to have it on the forum as well, so here we are... It's basically gathered info from the internet and personal experience.

Since the release of the Jets DLC, the handling characteristics of the Blackfish have changed and as a result, hovering has become a lot harder, but not impossible.

Important controls: (Plane Movement)
- Axis controls (Nose Down / Up, Bank Left / Right, Pedal Left / Right) to control aircraft movement.
- Thrust (Increase / Decrease or Analog) to control aircraft power.
- Speedbrake to slow down a lot quicker (very useful in the Blackfish).
- Auto-Vectoring On / Off to switch between Manual / Auto rotation of propellers.
- Flaps Down / Up to control flaps in Auto, and propeller orientation in Manual mode.

Manual (or VTOL) mode is highly suggested to maintain better control over the propeller orientation.

The Blackfish is a big aircraft and takes a lot more time to slow down than any other aircraft in ArmA. When approaching to land in VTOL mode, it is advisable to slow to 180 km/h and rotate your propellers to 90° (full up) no later than 3km from the landing site. Use Speedbrake to slow down to approximately 60 - 80 km/h by the time you reach 1 km to touchdown. Gradually reduce speed until able to hover or land.

To maintain a hover, set thrust to approximately 65 - 70 percent. To increase altitude, gradually increase thrust. To decrease altitude controllably, set thrust to 55 - 65%. Anything lower than 50% will very likely result in loss of sufficient lift, and a high sink rate.

While hovering, the Blackfish rotates very slow. Any turns required are best done with forward movement.

Hope it's useful to someone out there. :)

Cheers,
